Also, the Union Vale Town Board voted 4-1 on recreating the position of Town Tax Collector. A vote for such a position will make the Town liable for full retirement benefits given to Town elected officials. The idea of reinstating the Tax Collector position was that of Ms. Maas. At the January 18,2018 Official Meeting of the Union Vale Town Board, Ms. Maas said she wanted to “test” hiring a tax collector for Saturdays from February through June. At the time of her suggesting this, Mr. Welsh asked why June and not May as was done in the past as the end of the tax collector’s job. The reason May was the end was that after May the tax bills went to the County and not the Town.  Ms. Maas said that this was a test and it would be from February to June. Mr. Welsh also pointed out at the meeting that ” all this can be done by mail.” That too did not deter Ms. Maas from saying she wanted this test. Then the question of whether just one person, one “female” as Mr. Welsh said, was to be in Town Hall alone. The idea of having a constable present was floated. Then the Board agreed to the tax collection test. So you decide. Is this about tax collecting or creating a new elected position with benefits? Every elected official who accumulates ten years then receives life long benefits in insurance from the Town.

This voting list and the instructions for it are lengthy, but isn’t democracy worth all the fuss. Who wants to say to his/her child, I chose not to vote or I couldn’t be bothered? What more can we leave our progeny than a functioning democracy built on merit and not inheritance? Please vote. It literally is all we can do, but it is ALL, and we CAN DO!
